On Thursday\, November 20 at 6:00 PM\, renowned archaeologist Dr. Dennis Jenkins will present “Archaeology and Science at the Paisley Caves.” \nResearch at the world-famous Paisley Caves in south-central Oregon began in 2002 and continues today. Dr. Jenkins’ presentation features over 80 vivid slides highlighting one of North America’s oldest archaeological sites. Audiences will get an inside look at the ongoing scientific investigations conducted by researchers from around the world. Through an intimate exploration of time\, food\, health\, labor\, and technology\, attendees will gain new insight into the lives—and challenges—of Oregon’s earliest inhabitants. \nAbout Dr. Dennis Jenkins\nDr. Jenkins is a retired Senior Research Archaeologist from the University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History. He is best known for his groundbreaking work at Oregon’s Paisley Caves\, where he helped uncover 14\,500-year-old human DNA—reshaping our understanding of the first Americans. Over his distinguished career\, he directed major excavations\, authored or co-authored 11 books and more than 80 professional publications\, and appeared in numerous documentaries and major media outlets. In retirement\, he continues to publish\, including the forthcoming Paisley Caves Monograph and a chapter in Paleoamerican Odyssey II. \nThis free community lecture is supported by the Friends of the Crook County Library and the Crook County Historical Society. seating will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. On Thursday\, November 13 at 6:00 PM\, director of the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Archaeology (SOULA)\, Chelsea Rose\, MA\, RPA will present “Uncovering Oregon History with the Chinese Diaspora Project.” \nChelsea Rose is a historical archaeologist specializing in the settlement and development of the American West. She regularly collaborates with media\, students\, and community volunteers to promote archaeological awareness and historical stewardship. Chelsea is a co-founder and Principal Investigator of the award-winning Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project\, guest co-editor of the Oregon Historical Quarterly issue on the Chinese diaspora\, and co-editor of Chinese Diaspora Archaeology in North America (University Press of Florida). She also hosts the award- winning Underground History podcast in collaboration with Jefferson Public Radio and has partnered with the Oregon Historical Society on the Unearthing Oregon video series. \nThe Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project is a collaborative effort using community archaeology and public history to document the rich heritage of early Chinese Oregonians.
