On Thursday\, November 20 at 6:00 PM\, renowned archaeologist Dr. Dennis Jenkins will present “Archaeology and Science at the Paisley Caves.” \nResearch at the world-famous Paisley Caves in south-central Oregon began in 2002 and continues today. Dr. Jenkins’ presentation features over 80 vivid slides highlighting one of North America’s oldest archaeological sites. Audiences will get an inside look at the ongoing scientific investigations conducted by researchers from around the world. Through an intimate exploration of time\, food\, health\, labor\, and technology\, attendees will gain new insight into the lives—and challenges—of Oregon’s earliest inhabitants. \nAbout Dr. Dennis Jenkins\nDr. Jenkins is a retired Senior Research Archaeologist from the University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History. He is best known for his groundbreaking work at Oregon’s Paisley Caves\, where he helped uncover 14\,500-year-old human DNA—reshaping our understanding of the first Americans. Over his distinguished career\, he directed major excavations\, authored or co-authored 11 books and more than 80 professional publications\, and appeared in numerous documentaries and major media outlets. On Thursday\, November 13 at 6:00 PM\, director of the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Archaeology (SOULA)\, Chelsea Rose\, MA\, RPA will present “Uncovering Oregon History with the Chinese Diaspora Project.” \nChelsea Rose is a historical archaeologist specializing in the settlement and development of the American West. She regularly collaborates with media\, students\, and community volunteers to promote archaeological awareness and historical stewardship. Chelsea is a co-founder and Principal Investigator of the award-winning Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project\, guest co-editor of the Oregon Historical Quarterly issue on the Chinese diaspora\, and co-editor of Chinese Diaspora Archaeology in North America (University Press of Florida). She also hosts the award- winning Underground History podcast in collaboration with Jefferson Public Radio and has partnered with the Oregon Historical Society on the Unearthing Oregon video series. \nThe Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project is a collaborative effort using community archaeology and public history to document the rich heritage of early Chinese Oregonians. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of Western Music and Cowboy Poetry at The Bowman Museum in Prineville on Saturday\, September 27. DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate 80 years of the Crooked River Round Up at the Bowman Museum with Around the Campfire: Open Mic\, an afternoon of Western music and cowboy poetry\, happening Saturday\, June 28\, 2025\, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Bowman Museum. \nWhether you’re a seasoned performer or just want to enjoy the show\, this is a great opportunity to gather with friends and neighbors\, honor our heritage\, and have a little fun around the “campfire.” Hosted by Tom Swearingen\, a two-time Male Poet of the Year with the International Western Music Association (IWMA)\, this free\, family-friendly event invites performers of all ages to share songs\, stories\, and poems inspired by the spirit of the West. \nNew this year is Oregon’s Poet Laureate\, Ellen Waterston\, who will be reading an original poem just for this occasion. We’re grateful for Oregon Humanities who administers Oregon’s Poet Laureate program and helped arrange for Ellen to read. \nSign-ups begin on site at 12:30 PM and are first come\, first served. Each performer will have up to five minutes to take the stage\, so dust off your boots\, warm up your voice\, and get ready to entertain! Prizes will be awarded to Judges’ Choice “Top Hands\,” so bring your best. \nPresented in partnership with the International Western Music Association (IWMA) and Juni Art. \nA special thanks to the Crook County Historical Society\, Crooked River Round up\, Crooked River Round Foundation and supported by a grant from the Crook County Cultural Coalition with funds from the Oregon Cultural Trust to support Oregon’s art\, heritage\, and humanities. \n

On Friday\, June 20 at 6:00 PM\, the Bowman Museum will host the premiere of Unspoken Grit: Crook County – Part I\, the first installment in a four-part video documentary series. \nThis community-driven film digs deep into the dust and soul of Oregon’s high desert\, sharing the real-life stories of those who’ve weathered it\, worked it\, and called it home. \nRooted in tradition and rich with personal history\, this locally voiced documentary captures the true grit of a community built on perseverance. Through oral histories and firsthand accounts\, Unspoken Grit brings to life the voices of longtime Crook County residents. These are not just stories\, they are legacies\, handed down like well-worn saddles\, bearing the weight of time\, toil\, and tradition. \n“In a place where hard work is a way of life\, we want to honor the people who deserve it\, those who might not feel as seen as times change and let them know their stories matter\,” said Chiyanna Brooks\, director and producer of the film. “This documentary is a tribute to those who say they have nothing to tell yet have so much to share if you’re willing to listen.” \nSteeped in the rich history of Crook County\, the film offers an intimate look at the character and quiet strength forged in small towns and open country.
