SUMMARY:New Exhibit: Crook County Summers
DESCRIPTION:The Bowman Museum is excited to announce its upcoming exhibit\, “Crook County Summers\,” opening at the Belknap Exhibit Center and running June 8 through August 27. This engaging exhibit invites visitors to step back in time and celebrate the rich traditions and history of some of Crook County’s most beloved summer events. “Crook County Summers” will feature the stories\, photographs\, artifacts\, and memories connected to the Crooked River Roundup\, Horse Races\, and the Crook County Fair—events that have brought generations of community members together and helped shape the identity and spirit of Crook County. \nFor decades\, these summer traditions have represented more than entertainment; they have served as gathering places where families\, friends\, ranchers\, competitors\, and visitors have come together to celebrate community and local heritage. SUMMARY:Archeology of the Ochocos
DESCRIPTION:THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF EARLY ‘PERSISTENT PLACES’ IN CENTRAL OREGON\nBowman Museum invites the community to a lecture on the archaeology of the Ochoco National Forest and Crooked River National Grassland on Wednesday\, October 28\, at 6 p.m. Presented by Anne Dowd\, a U.S. Forest Service archaeologist\, the program will explore discoveries revealing how people lived in Central Oregon thousands of years ago. \nArchaeologists have documented sites in the Ochoco region dating from approximately 13\,000 to 8\,500 years ago. These locations\, ranging from large base camps to resource-processing sites\, provide evidence of early inhabitants who returned to familiar places for reliable resources. \nDowd will discuss how these discoveries expand our understanding of early human lifeways\, seasonal movements\, and adaptations to changing environmental conditions. The presentation will also connect research from cave and open-air archaeological sites and highlight the importance of protecting these irreplaceable resources. \nCommunity members interested in Central Oregon history and archaeology are encouraged to attend this engaging presentation. \nWhat: The Archaeology of the Ochoco Mountains\nPresenter: Anne Dowd\, U.S. Forest Service Archaeologist\nWhen: Wednesday\, October 28\, 2026\, at 6 p.m.\nWhere: Bowman Museum\, Prineville\, Oregon
