Building a Legacy: The Wittmers' Journey from France to Central Oregon

Madeline M. Bachman was born in 1890 in Bouxwiller, a picturesque town nestled in Alsace-Lorraine, France. Her journey across the Atlantic to the United States began as a young adult, drawn by the promise of new opportunities in the state of Washington. Little did she know, fate would reunite her with a fellow townsman, Michael Wittmer, who had independently made the same life-changing decision to emigrate from Bouxwiller in 1877.

Their shared roots quickly blossomed into romance in Spokane, where they married in July 1912. Over the next few years, they welcomed three children – George, Dorothy, and Catherine. Seeking new adventures, they returned briefly to Alsace-Lorraine in 1921 before realizing that their future lay across the ocean. The United States beckoned once more, offering better prospects.

Michael found his calling in the meat business, operating markets across Montana, Minnesota, and eventually settling in Enterprise, Oregon. In 1934, encouraged by a business partner, Art Schnoor, the Wittmers relocated to Prineville. Here, they established the Independent Meat Market, a venture that thrived under their stewardship. Madeline, known for her quiet strength, managed their home while participating in local activities.

Initially situated on southeast Main Street, the market later relocated to northwest Main Street, becoming a cornerstone of the community. Their daughter Dorothy married Art Schnoor, solidifying family ties within their successful business. Even after Art and Dorothy assumed management in 1950, Michael remained dedicated to the market until his passing on October 31, 1951. Madeline, too, contributed silently but significantly to their community.

Their legacy endures through their children, each becoming influential members of Prineville society. Madeline passed away on February 25, 1953, a few years after Michael, both are buried at Juniper Haven Cemetery in Prineville. Their story epitomizes the American dream, where immigrants like Madeline and Michael Wittmer found success, community, and a lasting home in Central Oregon.
