New Exhibit
The Bowman Museum is pleased to announce a compelling new exhibit, “A Man Named York,” on display in the Belknap Exhibit Center from April 1 through May 31.
Presented by the Oregon Black Pioneers, this traveling exhibit explores the life and legacy of York—an enslaved African American man who played a vital role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Despite his significant contributions to one of the most important expeditions in American history, York’s story has often been overlooked.
“A Man Named York” sheds light on York’s experiences, his skills and responsibilities during the expedition, and the complex realities of his life before and after the journey. Through engaging panels and historical interpretation, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of York’s role and the broader history of African Americans in early Oregon and the American West.
This exhibit offers a meaningful opportunity for the community to reflect on the history and recognize the individuals who helped shape the region.
The exhibit is included with regular museum admission and is open to the public during regular hours. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to attend.
